Abhisheka, also called Abhishekam, is conducted by priests by pouring the libations on the image of the deity being worshiped amidst chanting mantras. Unsurely offing such as milk, yogurt, honey, sugar, ghee is called Panchaamrutham. Rosewater, sesame oil, sandalwood paste may be poured among the other offerings depending on the type of Abhishekam is performed. This rite is routinely performed in Hindu and Jain temples.
Abhishekam is crucial to any pooja ceremony as much as the chanting of mantras and the performance of aarti. It is also a practice that is unique to Hinduism.
